“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Matthew 16:15
As I was thinking of what to share as this week’s word of the week, this verse came to my mind. Last week as a family we saw and experienced God as a comforter, and one who strengthens us. This verse is a reminder of the need to have a solid personal relationship with God – it’s not about what people say about Him, or who they tell you He is, but what you say about Him, who you say He is!
I like how Christ lets them express themselves when He asked “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” (Matthew 16:13), and they answered. Then He asked, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” and Simon Peter answered in verse 16 “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” See what Jesus told him in verse 17, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven”.
God wants us to know Him in ways that only He can reveal Himself to be – and that takes faith, and pursuing a relationship with Him. I really love how Jesus validated that Simon Peter’s revelation of who Christ is was revealed to Him by God! That is powerful! Because God is God, He reveals Himself in all our seasons – so we come to know God and His nature as God in different ways in different seasons. And this just proves His being as God – that He is our all, our everything, and so when we allow Him to reveal Himself to us, He does.
It is beautiful to know God – and to be able to answer the question “who do you say that I am” in a personal, intimate way! Yearn to grow that relationship with God and to know Him deeper and deeper!
Dear God,
Reveal to us who you are, let us know you personally and know you deeper!
Amen
